Do not lie

Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds (Col.3.9).

In daily conversations, words are used to convey our thoughts and hearts. It is through those words that we get to understand each other, build trusts and enhance relationships. However, some people do not ascribe value to their words hence they lie to other people with no sense of remorse. Paul warns against that. Truth is, lie is like a virus that spreads to destroy all that was built with truth. It destroys the community of faith.

From our text, lie is linked to the old nature of sin. The new covenant believer is empowered to speak the truth without fear or favor. He is also imbued with the nature of Christ by which he becomes uncomfortable living in deception any longer. Therefore, the demand on the believer is not beyond his reach. We walk in love, speaking the truth to one another. And where you find yourself defaulting, return to God for help. The only person we are to please is Christ and he demands truth from us.

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).

It is clear that such attitude is an attributes of the devil. He does it as part of his nature. However, we have escaped such lifestyle by the cleansing of the Blood of Jesus. We must remain committed to speaking the truth in love. That is how we build trust and edify one another.
