Good Fight
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.(Jude.1.3).
In life, one must be resolute to fight for things that matter. It is a sign of the value placed on such things. When you build a house, you install burglary iron, install gates, install CCTV and other security apparatus all in a bid to secure it. However, not many people understand that certain things like their faith requires such defense.
To contend means to fight for, to strive to keep or to struggle against contrary forces to maintain something. It is vital to apply such force to your Faith. Why is it so? This is because the matter of faith is an eternal issue that could determine your fate. Anything good is worth fighting for including your faith.
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses (1Tim.6.12).
Paul encouraged Timothy to engage in battles when it comes to his faith. Battle against unbelief, battle against distractions, battle against forces of darkness, battle against self and so on. No true soldier is so decorated without fighting battles. Contending for the fight is a battle worth fighting. The joy is that we are assured of victory.
The hymn writer counsels Christians to “seek not yet repose and to cast the dream of ease away” because we are in the midst of foes. Watch and pray.
