Memory Loss
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, (Phil.3.13).
Memory loss can be a gift from the assertion of Paul above. There are experiences in life that must not be remembered if meaningful progress will be made. Painful experiences can inhibit progress while pleasant ones can also limit the progress one could make. Memories are good but must be put where they belong – rear mirror position.
Although memory could be lost due to aging, sickness or involuntarily but Paul suggests we deliberately let go of certain memories. Forgetting those things that are past can help in challenging us to a higher height. It can also help in offering genuine forgiveness to those who wrong us. The past is at best left in the past. It is like ashes that has no fresh fire again.
“Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old (Isa.43.18).
Forgetting the past has many advantages but it must be learned. Remember the past good, faithfulness of God, acts of kindness done to you but never be imprisoned by the past. It is a dangerous thing to experience. Always refresh your mind regularly with the promises of the future. Endeavor to live in the present with all necessary attention. Have you failed before? Learn the lesson and move on.
There is a better tomorrow right ahead of you. Weeping may endure till night but joy comes in the morning. Never be tied down by the past with no energy to anticipate the future. Let your heart be warmed by the hope that is found in Christ. Keep moving towards the mark of the high calling. Shalom!
