But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion… And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke.10.33, 37).

The ultimate expression of godliness is not seen in performing miracles (though it is good), it is not seen in prayers (it is important too) but the manifestation of godly attributes is found in showing love to the undeserving. Jesus explained that the commandments can be summarized into two: love God and love your neighbor.

The story of the good Samaritan was told, to explain what true service to God means. Our spirituality will have no meaning if it does not have a positive influence on our neighbors. It is not enough to claim to love God but hates people. It is a contradiction.

Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions (1 John 3:18 NLT).

To proclaim faith without corresponding works is vain. While religious folks think helping the helpless victim was a delay to their act of worship, Jesus would rather see the help as an act of worship. We need to grow affectionately towards people as we make progress spiritually. Faith that is not backed up with works is dead.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also (Jas.2.26).
