The Believers’ Disclaimer
They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world (John.17.16).
The sense of affinity is easily attached to where we live, what we see, where we work and all that are material within our reach. Hence, it is easier to lay claim to the most familial and familiar objects around us. However, Jesus said the believer is not of this world!
This statement puts to rest the agitation to represent the world but it never absolved the believer of the responsibility of colonizing the world for Christ. It rather shifts the believers’ allegiance from the world to the Lord. They are not of this world means, they only live here but not by the principle that governs the world. They are diplomat representing the Kingdom of God in the world. They play by different rules.
Jesus pointed out the relationship between himself, his followers and the world. His denial of permanent residence here serves as a guide to whosoever will follow Christ. The goal is not to conform to the world system but to lead people towards transformation in Christ. It is necessary to bear it in mind consciously that, “I am not of this world.”
… that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation (2Cor.5.19).
Our reason for being in the world is to reconciled the world to God. We will remain here as long as He permits but we definitely don’t belong here. We have a home that no physical eyes can eyes can see – eternal home with the Father.
We are in the world but not of the world. Hallelujah!
